Benefits of Dental Implants
Seattle, WA

Rendering of jaw with dental implant at Queen Anne Family Dental in Seattle, WA 98109-2319If you have missing teeth and are considering the best course for restoration, we invite you to learn more about dental implants. This treatment is the closest restoration to having your own natural tooth rebuilt. We begin from the base and build up from the bone. Our staff at Queen Anne Family Dental can help you have a tooth and root that works with your jawbone and restores a fully functioning tooth following the loss of the natural one. Whether you have one missing tooth, or all of them, whether this is a new loss, or you have been missing teeth for years, we can help.

Missing teeth can be frustrating, they change how you chew, your look, your speech, and even cause negative changes to your oral health. Traditional methods of tooth replacement may restore some of these losses, but only a dental implant can give you a fully rebuilt tooth. This is because we rebuild the root and reestablish connection with the jawbone.

Bone Loss and Missing Teeth

Tooth loss can occur for a variety of reasons including disease and injury. When loss happens, the root is also lost, meaning the connection to the jawbone is severed. Our bones require the stimulation of movement to stay healthy, including our jawbone. When that motion stops, atrophy begins. When a person loses a tooth, the bone has an immediate reaction of some loss, and this loss continues with time. Patients with missing teeth suffer from decreased bone mass causing changes in their facial shape, often giving them what we have come to recognize as an older appearance. By restoring missing teeth, we can also improve your bone health and increase your bone mass filling out your face.

How Dental Implants Work

We can place implants that we can then use to rebuild teeth. The implant is not a tooth itself, rather it is a replacement root system. Implants are that connecting piece between the bone and replacement tooth. Dental implants come with a variety of options depending on the work being done and the needs of the patient. This includes options in length, width, and materials. Dental implants can be made of titanium or a non-metallic ceramic. The ceramic variety can be helpful for patients with metal sensitivities or if the implant is being used in the front, where dark metal could be seen through the gum tissue.

We surgically embed the implant into the jawbone. As the bone heals, it will grow up and around the threads of the implant, fusing the two firmly together. Once we have reestablished a firm base, or root system, we can then use it to stabilize a prosthetic. The number of implants needed will depend on multiple factors including how many teeth are being replaced and where the missing teeth are located in your mouth. Some treatments may only require a single implant, others may require multiple implants. Your treatment is customized to you.
